Watts Towers, built by Simon Rhodia over a period of 33 years, is quite possibly one of the most formative art experiences i've had in my adult life. towering and majestic, reminiscent of GaudÃ, it's easy to see them as a cathedral dedicated to the sky and the surrounding neighborhood. if you're in LA, it's worth the short trip to south central (yes, that south central) to go to the Towers. there are amazing volunteers, born and raised in Watts, that provide tours, work towards the preservation of the Towers, and welcome their community as well as outsiders to this magical place.
the Watts House Project is dedicated to renovating and restoring the surrounding neighborhood. artists, designers, and community members are working together to reduce the ecological footprint,, as well as infuse art and enhance the quality of life in this overlooked neighborhood.
Friends of Watts Towers (this site hasn't been updated in awhile, i hope this organization is still running.)
what magical places should i go to next? what's the most magical place you've been? MAGIC!
