naoshima is an island town, set off the southern coast of Japan. you can call it an art island - it's main draw is the amazing "contemporary" art you'll find on it, at the
Chichu Art Museum, Bennesse House, and the Art House Project. i use "contemporary" because Claude Monet is decidedly
not contemporary, yet his pieces are on the island. the whole island
feels like a contemporary art piece in itself. it's magical. it takes a few trains and a ferry to get there - but no worries, it's Japan so everything is on time and you won't get lost. i make a point to exult the wonder that is naoshima. you must go if you're going to Japan.
